Attract Butterflies with a Butterfly Garden

Splashes of Color

Plant in patches. Butterflies are attracted to reds, oranges, and yellows. Plant groupings of each of these colors to help butterflies notice them more easily.

Feed the Kids

Plants, such as fennel, dill and parsley, are popular food sources for caterpillars that’ll later turn into butterflies. If you have a larger area, milkweek is a prized food source for Monarch and other catapillers. If you’re worried about how the plants will look if they are being eaten, plant them in an inconspicuous spot.

Feed the Adults

Butterflies love the nector from such plants as butterfly bush and daylily. Plant flowers with a variety of bloom times, such as cornflowers and bachelor’s buttons.

Let Them Relax

Flowers aren’t the only things butterflies like. They’ll also appreciate a sunbaked surface to warm their wings in the morning and a shallow saucer of water with a sandy bottom where they can drink any time of day.

Keep them Safe

Avoid the use of pesticides around your butterfly garden, and apply only on calm days. Also consider planting a windbreak, such as the tall bushes, trees or evergreens, to calm the air for safe landings.

Welcome Pollinators to Your Garden

Flowering trees, shrubs, and plants will naturally attract pollinators such as bees. Welcome these industrious workers of nature, since they are critical to our food chain.
